Buying a Dog: What You Need to Know
Before we dive into our puppy listings, we answer the most important questions about buying a dog.

Why Buy a Dog?
There are several reasons why you may prefer purchasing a dog over adopting one, including:
- You’re more likely to find rare or pure breeds
- It’s often easier to find puppies to purchase than adopt
- Finding the right breed and age is less up to chance
- You can be sure of your puppy’s lineage and family health
- A purchased puppy may not have the stress issues that can be caused by shelters
Overall, purchasing a puppy from an ethical breeder may be a better option for you if you have your heart set on a rare breed, you’re only interested in pure breeds, or you find training puppies with stress or abandonment issues challenging.

What Is the Difference Between a Breeder and a Pet Store?
While you’re looking for your perfect puppy for sale, you’ll likely come across both breeders and pet stores. Though they may seem to have a lot in common on the surface, they’re actually quite different, and whether or not you bring home a healthy puppy may rely heavily on which you choose.
Pet stores are businesses that sell puppies (and, typically, other animals as well) that are sometimes sourced from breeders. However, very often, these dogs are sourced from puppy mills that breed large amounts of puppies as quickly as possible in frequently inhumane conditions. Unfortunately, dogs from puppy mills may be more prone to health or emotional issues.
Breeders, on the other hand, are individuals who breed reasonable amounts of puppies (often only a few litters at a time, sometimes only one). While there are problematic breeders, too, there are many ethical breeders; you can choose a reliable one by ensuring the breeder answers all your questions, allows you to visit, and introduces you to their dogs.
Buying from a reputable breeder is the most important step when it comes to buying a healthy and happy puppy.

How Much Does It Cost to Buy a Dog?
How much it costs to buy a dog varies widely depending on your location and the type of breed you are looking for. On the lower end, you can often find more common breeds like beagles or Labradors for a few hundred dollars, while higher-end breeds like Siberian huskies or French bulldogs may cost you several thousand dollars. Some show quality breeds may cost up to $10,000 or more.
No matter your budget, there’s likely a breed that can work well within it.

Can You Buy a Puppy?
Absolutely; in fact, it’s easier to find puppies for sale than adult dogs for sale. Typically, breeders will put you on a waiting list while their dog is pregnant, and once the puppies are a few weeks old, you can be paired with your perfect match!
Can You Return a Dog You Buy?
While return policies can vary depending on the breeder, typically, you’re able to return your puppy if you end up not able to care for it or it doesn’t work for your lifestyle. Most breeders will have a clause in your contract saying you must return the puppy to them instead of reselling it to someone else or giving it to a shelter.
